A TIME OF CHANGE! A TIME TO CELEBRATE! CHRIST IS RISEN! ALLELUIA!!!!
But how will it change the lives of the many vulnerable people in our world today?
A huge thank you to the many people who have contributed to the services over the past couple of weeks: the musicians (including Philip Watson and the Franklin Community Choir), readers, worship leaders, caterers and those who helped us to reach out into the community and share the quality Christ came to share in our world: hope, love, peace, joy and compassion. May we take our part in ensuring that these gifts grow in our community and our world.
A very special thank you to Ann Rollinson for sharing with us her amazing talents in creating visual effects that enhance our experience of these special occasions in the church calendar. I appreciate that many of you will not have had the opportunity to see these displays and how they changed over the events of Holy Week and Easter. In the church, the season of Easter continues through to our celebration of the Ascension of Christ. At that time, we have a series of special Sundays including the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the people at Pentecost as Christ had promised.
We have a challenge at the moment with a shortage of storage space. Some of this is due to storage in preparation for another round of emergency events. Pukekohe Community Action is trying to raise funds to put a garage in for storage. I have put in an application for a grant, but grants and donations are much reduced and very competitive to source due to the current economy.
Over the past week a series of weather events has occurred in New Zealand and several alerts have been sent out through cellphones. It is easy to become complacent about these as we have not yet experienced significant flooding in our community during this round of events, but remember we are getting these alerts because of the criticism Auckland Emergency Management received for not acting fast enough during the previous flooding. We have seen the effects of emergencies in several other countries and parts of New Zealand so let’s not become too complacent.
At the end of March, 37 of us gathered for lunch at the Hidden Cafe in Paerata. We have had this as an annual event for the past three years. As we have an area to ourselves it gives us more opportunities to interact with each other. It is good to meet up with each other where we can get to know each other better in an informal social environment.
Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Easter blessing to you all — Jan

A VERY HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY, DOROTHY
Dorothy Gibbons (nee Fowle) was born in Sunderland in northeast England on April 29, 1925. Yes, on Tuesday this week Dorothy will turn 100.
We started the celebration of Dorothy’s birthday with a special morning tea at the beginning of the month at our Mothers’ Union meeting.
In 1953 Dorothy and her family moved to Surrey where she joined St Oswald’s, the local Anglican church, and became very actively involved, organising the flower roster and always running a stall at the annual parish fair. Mothers’ Union was an important part of her life. Early last year, she was awarded life membership and her 65 years membership badge.
Dorothy was also supportive of her family and school activities. When son Richard joined the choir, they knew they could count on her going and joining the team preparing hot lunches when they had their weekend practices.
Dorothy moved to New Zealand in 2017 and joined St Andrew’s at that time. She had previously visited New Zealand 15 or 16 times. Dorothy and daughter Susan moved into St Andrew’s Court village about three years ago, which has enabled her to stay more actively involved with St Andrew’s.
On Sunday, April 27, the parish joined with Dorothy’s family to celebrate her birthday at a special morning tea in the Reid Anderson hall after the 9.30am service.
Happy birthday from us all, Dorothy!

SUSTAINABILITY
Ghost Moths
By Keith Gardner
My Dad use to talk about ghost moths when we were tramping. They come from the Hepialidae family and are found all over the world. New Zealand has 27 different species of ghost moths. These have been around for ages and have evolved over time.
They have short antennae and wings that don’t beat in time with each other. This means they are not very energy efficient but nevertheless some are the fastest fliers in the insect world. The moths are nocturnal. Some will live in scrubland, forest and caves while others live in holes under stones, rotting logs or in trees near native forests.
They flit through the night-time forest giving anyone nearby a spooky fright.
Because they fly at night they are commonly regarded as belonging to the realm of spirits. Early Maori believed the pepe tuna or puriri moth was a spiritual messenger, or the ghost of an ancestor returning to visit his descendants.
The biggest of the moths, puriri, are named after the tree they live in. They are endemic to New Zealand and are found only in the North Island. In the South Island sphagnum porina moths live in habitats such as moss bogs in Otago and Southland.
Once the puriri caterpillars hatch, about 20 days after eggs are laid, they spend about two months on the forest floor eating deadwood and fungi. When ready they will search for the right tree, climb the trunk and make a tunnel. They burrow a tunnel shaped like the number seven in the tree. The entrance slopes upwards to stop the rain from getting in.
The caterpillar sleeps in a vertical shaft it makes. Often it covers the entrance with a web of silk which makes it look like the tree bark.
The caterpillar lives in the tree for four years, eating the wood around the tunnel entrance.
Often when looking at a puriri tree, you can see the holes the caterpillar has made.
When the caterpillar reaches about 100mm long it pupates. It stays a pupa for up to six months and emerges as a moth, usually in spring or early summer.
Once it becomes a moth, it survives for just a few days. This is because it doesn’t have a working mouth so it cannot eat. In its time as a moth, it mates and produces as many eggs as possible.
Did you know New Zealand has 29 species of butterfly and 1645 species of moth? The largest butterfly is the monarch with a wingspan of up to 100mm but the puriri moth’s wingspan can reach 150mm. The female moths are larger than the males. The kaka is expert at digging the puriri caterpillar out of its tree tunnel for a meal.
