A MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR
Christ the Good Shepherd
It is not very often that we have the day on which we celebrate Christ the Good Shepherd and Anzac day on the same day. The readings for Christ the Good Shepherd Sunday remind us of Christ’s love and care for all people. On Anzac Day we remember those who served their country and our world as they sought to bring peace and hope for others. Both of these days reflect on the lives of people seeking to bring hope and peace to the world. We see such examples of love and care in so many places in the world today as people seek remedies for the Covid-19 pandemic while placing themselves and often their loved ones at risk.
In John 10:11-18, Jesus reminds us, “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.”
There is no greater commitment to loving, serving and caring for others than to be willing to lay down one’ s life in caring for people who are often considered to be strangers. There are many such examples of people caring for others during war-time and the stories of Christ and his disciples as they endeavoured to follow in Christ’s footsteps. There are many examples of people going out to help others, even people who are fighting each other, and who consider each other to be enemies. When people see others who are suffering there are times when they are willing to reach out their hand in compassion and showing the love of God to others. Yes, Christ’s love and compassion were shown to the two men who hung on the cross on Good Friday and also to those who were involved in the crucifixion. The love of God demonstrated by Christ giving up his life for the enhancement of life for others and in war times the people risking their lives to help others who were suffering set great examples.
It is interesting how when we give food parcels to parents we ask, what hot drinks do you prefer, the answer is so often, “Milo please”. I ask, “Do you like Milo?” The answer is so often, “No, but my children do”. I then ask, “And what do you like?” “Oh, I would really love a cup of tea or coffee please.” They then get both as they are showing love and care for others before themselves.
As we reflect on Christ’ s love for others help us to seek the face of Christ in the people of need in our community.

Space
A programme offering support for first-time parents/caregivers and babies in their first year of development. Come along and meet other new parents in the Franklin area. Seasons — Children, adult and parent
An after-school children and parents group held at 4pm on Thursdays for children who have experienced a significant loss or grief in their lives. Oasis Play Group
Playgroup for preschool children and parents/caregivers. Mondays and Fridays 9.30am in the Reid Anderson Hall.
Op Shop
The Op Shop will open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to noon in the Nora Brown Hall.
Selwyn
The Selwyn group gets together on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am to noon, in the Reid Anderson Hall. Lunch available on Tuesdays.
Older persons’ fellowship group each Thursday 9.30am to 11.30am.

FROM VESTRY
It is with great regret that we farewell Leonie Menzies from the parish office. Her willingness to help people with her positive, friendly personality has been very much appreciated. We are fortunate to have Judith Tucker take up this position. Judith recently retired from MP Andrew Bayly’s office.
GROUNDS AND MAINTENANCE
The rubble from the arch at the Queen St entrance to the church will soon be removed so it can be used to make replicas of the imagery on the arch. We are expecting quotes and detail drawings of the arch available soon. The arch will be moved further back from the road. This will enable us to modify the landscape and it will make for a reduced cost for the project as the existing foundations should not need to be removed.
The Photinia hedge at the Wesley St Entrance will be removed and the fence continued along the boundary. There will be the replanting of some shrubs. The hedge between the garage and the new food store is also to be removed.
During the first week of May the concrete in front of the office door was modified to make the front entrance to Reid Anderson hall easier for walkers, wheelchairs and babby buggies. The ramp has been modified slightly to make it safer.
We are currently waiting for Wharfe Bros to get the materials to repair a leak in the ceiling in the men’s toilet in the courtyard. We will then need to repair the ceiling that has collapsed.
HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY
THERE IS A DEFIBRILLATOR INSTALLED BY THE OFFICE DOOR
A copy of the Parish Health and Safety Policy along with the processes required for the implementation of the policy is currently available on the shelf at the back of the church, published on our website or available from the parish office.
An evacuation plan is in each area for the church and complex.
Reid Anderson Hall: Assembly area is the car park adjoining the hall unless the location of the emergency situation is on the south wall preventing evacuation on that side of the building. In this case the assembly area is on the road frontage in front of the church.
Nora Brown Hall: Assembly area is on the road frontage in front of the church or on the vicarage lawn depending on the location of the emergency situation.
Other rooms in the complex: Assembly area move to the vicarage lawn.
St Andrew’s Church: Assembly area is on the road frontage at the front of the church.
St Paul’s Church: Assembly area is on the road frontage at the front of the church.
First aid kits and accident reporting sheets are located:
1. Reid Anderson — In the cupboard over the small hand basin, by the back door in the kitchen.
2. Nora Brown — on the shelf above the microwave. Record sheets are next to the microwave.
3. Parish office — 2nd to top shelf on left side in the back room. The office is locked when unattended.
Forms are to be completed as soon as the accident has been dealt with. Treatment including resources that are used are to be recorded on the sheet.
